Lastly, there are the two volumes by Eisenberg, titled Grundriss der deutschen Grammatik. It's highly academic, but well worth consulting, even though it isn't fully up to date anymore (being originally published in late 80's ~890 pages). Secondly, there is the the Deutsche Grammatik by Engel. Die Grammatik.) - I'd recommend going for older editions, though, as the editions from ~2000 on tend to mix up spoken and written German too much / don't distinguish them as much as needed (600-1350 pages, depending on the edition). For starters, there are the Duden grammars ( Duden, Band 4. (~700 pages)įor German, there are many alternatives. It's more of a compendium, though, covering the entirety of the Portuguese language. The only bigger grammar of Portuguese I have around is the Gramática da língua portuguesa by Vázquez Cuesta and Mendes da Luz. They're quite prescriptive, but also authoritative and VERY worthy of seeking out. (Both books are about 800+ pages, afaik)įor Spanish, the only good grammars I can think of are those by the Academia Real ( Gramática de la lengua española, 2005 and Esbozo de una nueva gramática de la lengua española, 1973). Also, Wagner & Pinchon never let me down. While Grevisse is considered to be an ABSOLUTE classic and masterpiece, it's too prescriptive and chatty for my taste. R/RandomActsOfLetters Language-Specific Subreddits Afro-Asiatic Languageįor French, there are both Grevisse's Le bon usage and the Grammaire du français classique et moderne by Wagner and Pinchon.
